Davis can draw an intricately detailed, 18th century French city like no one else. I was blown away by some of the backgrounds. He draws them sketchy and quick (I'm assuming), but doesn't spare the details. Read it for the cityscapes alone.
The demons! Holy shit. Seriously disturbed, but endlessly creative. He avoids the stereotypical horns and wings in favor of more fleshy, bizarre abominations, including the most creative take on the devil that I have ever seen.
The grey tones were all cut and applied by hand. Jesus. He admits this in the sketchbook section at the end. Blew my mind.
Also, Mike Mignola wrote the intro and did one of the covers. Serious cool points there.
